The Red Wings did not stray far from home. The sweater is the classic red with white striping, and the winged wheel stays on the chest. What changes is the lettering: HOCKEYTOWN, the nickname the city has used for decades, arches above the logo in white block letters.
The details are for longtime fans. The collar laces up with copper-colored eyelets, and inside the hem is a purple octopus pattern, a tribute to the octopus tossed on the ice since the 1952 playoffs and to Al, the giant purple octopus that hangs over the arena during the postseason.
On the ice it comes with red helmets, pants and socks with white stripes. Detroit changed less than most clubs, so this is the safe choice for fans who like the regular look.
